About

Rochester SAGE (Supporting Advanced & Gifted Education) is a grassroots organization to encourage Michigan’s Rochester Community Schools to implement a program for advanced and gifted students from elementary through high school.  Rochester’s current differentiation program often does not adequately meet the needs of advanced and gifted students, may not provide a challenging and stimulating environment for them, and can harm advanced students as they do not develop necessary skills in overcoming challenges, studying difficult material, and persisting through hard work.

We are a group of parents, teachers, and students who recognize the need for advanced and gifted education in our schools and will work with the school board, principals, and educators to implement it.

We believe that a strong advanced and gifted education program will be a boon to Rochester Community Schools and the Rochester / Rochester Hills community.  Parents will have a choice to send their advanced and gifted children to our schools instead of costly private and parochial schools, increasing school funding.  Our advanced educational system will encourage families to reside in Rochester and Rochester Hills for the academic opportunities present in our community.  A vibrant advanced and gifted program will lead to increased enrollment for our schools and a stronger housing market for our neighborhoods.

We invite public comment and support so that we can help meet the needs of your children in our schools.

Congratulations on becoming Freshly Pressed. While my two children attend Utica Community Schools, I am a graduate (1989) of RHS. I think it’s great you are seeking ways to offer a more challenging curriculum at all grade levels for students who would benefit. I think UCS offers competitive gifted programs at the high school level. However, I know plenty of parents who would like to see their students challenged more during the elementary school years. I look forward to reading more of your posts and following you on this quest.

I am an educator and parent who would go out of my way to send my child to RCS, if they developed a program like the one described.

Helen, I agree! After we could get nowhere with RCS, we team with Avondale School District to create a gifted program that will engage and challenge the students through Project Based Learning.
